Architecture & Engineering

A tiny selection of projects I have had the opportunity to work on. In these projects I have worked in a combined role as architectural designer and as parametric design specialist - merging creative design solutions with computational performance optimizations for sustainable architecture.

WIND SPINNER

2024 | First experimentations with Stable Diffusion conditioned with ControlNet,  testing various prompts and settings. Part of my personal exploration in the uses and limitations of AI in architecture.

The input image is generated with a parametric model (also used to create the animation below). The parametric model was developed for a hobby project, a wind spinner made as a gift.

GILDE COLLEGE

2021 - 2023 | Façade design and generative design optimization for a multi-disciplinary educational building with sports function.

Parametric design: Facade on daylight, radiation, view. Programm on orientation, daylight.

MUSEUM VAN KASTEL

2021 | Museum van_Kastel is a virtual art gallery made to exhibit the art of my sister, Sappho van_Kastel. Created during a COVID lockdown, the VR model replicates the experience of an art gallery.

In two follow-up exhibitions, the museum displayed a selection of my fineliner drawings and of my architectural student projects.

The video on the left shows a development test build, created in the Unreal Engine 3.7.

ROC FRIESE POORT

2022 - 2023 | Façade design and generative design optimization for a multi-disciplinary educational building.

PYTHON CRASH COURSE FOR ARCHITECTS & ENGINEERS

2023 | A Python crash course, co-developed with Leandre Sassi (01design.tech), for students and professionals in the field of architecture and engineering.

The course brings its students with no prior knowledge to an advanced understanding of Python, covering the following topics:

VISUAL ANALYTICS FOR GENERATIVE DESIGN EXPLORATION

2018 | This graduation project combines machine learning, gamification, building performance simulations and generative design to create a computational design methodology for the design of a net Zero-Energy sports hall.

Built in a game development environment, the project introduces an interactive environment in which designers can intuitively explore a high-dimensional data set of design options and, thus, make better design decisions.

THE GLASS LAB

2016 | Design of a new extension to the TU Delft Faculty of Architecture, using load-bearing glass elements. The shape of the glass elements are developed using form-finding processes, resulting in organic shapes.

A parametric way of working was at the core of this study project. Grasshopper models were used to rationalize the façade panelization (minimizing cutting losses) and to generate the structure's geometries.
